the Demerol, the antibiotics, and the wine for her lapse in judgmentand she'd be right. But she couldn't explain why telling McCall about her past had felt so damn good.
Something was happening to her she couldn't understand. Ever since she'd met Christian McCall feelings she'd never experienced, feelings she hadn't believed she could experience, had been racing through her without pause.
It had to be the angel's fault.
"Speaking of angels," D.J. muttered, opening her eyes, "what happened to mine?"
"Ask and ye shall receive."
D.J.'s neck snapped toward the sound of Josie's voice from the kitchen. She groaned as the suddenness of her movement caused a resurgence of pain.
"Are you all right, dear?" Josie walked out of the kitchen holding a cup of coffee and a glass of water. She handed the water to D.J., along with some pills. "Take your medicine like a good girl."
D.J. frowned, but a twinge of pain from her shoulder made her obey the angel's soft command. She drained the water and handed the empty glass to Josie, then accepted the steaming coffee with a nod of thanks. "Where've you been?"
"Here and there. Up and down. All around. Angel stuff."
"Did you discover any clues as to who shot me and why?"
Josie shook her head. "But I do know there are just a few days left."
D.J. looked up, then swallowed her mouthful of coffee. The liquid burned a path to her empty stom-
